Why branded gifts could see you saving money this holiday season!

As the Christmas festivities fast approach choosing the right present for clients and employees can be a mind field for businesses looking to mark the season’s celebrations.

For many businesses it is a time to take the opportunity to thank clients and employees for all their hard work and support throughout the year with a special token of their gratitude.

From branded gifts to chocolate boxes, stationery or tech there are lots of options to choose from.

However, with some gifts being tax deductible and others not facing the same exemptions it is important to take into consideration the wider implications of gifting for your business.

At LG Davis we have been helping companies supply quality gift ideas for over 60 years and are breaking down the festive tax rules to help you look at getting the most out of giving as well as sharing some of our top tips for gift ideas this season.

When it comes to Christmas gifts not all presents are treated the same by HMRC. With Christmas hampers and food gifts facing tax bills but branded gifts exempt it is important to think carefully about what you send to thank employees and clients this year if you don’t want to incur any unwanted additional costs.

What are the rules when giving Christmas gifts to employees?

In general, gifts to employees are considered as ‘benefits in kind’ and therefore subject to tax. However, there are some exemptions that mean Christmas gifting could benefit your business not only be boosting staff morale but also helping to reduce your tax bill.

Gifts that cost less than £50 per employee and aren’t cash, or vouchers that can be converted into cash, are considered trivial benefits and not taxed.

You can also reclaim VAT on employee gifts if they are strictly for business purposes and not extravagant.

How can I say thank you to my clients this festive season?

Just as with employee gifts client gifts should cost less than £50 per person. Be aware there are also some extra rules to consider though.

Advertising gifts that are branded with your company logo are tax deductible. However, they cannot be food, drink, tobacco or vouchers that can be exchanged for goods.

If you are looking to give some festive cheer this year and mark the occasion by thanking those that have supported your business for the past 12 months why not explore our top gifting ideas for 2023.
