Too much Stuff?

I'm sure that by now you're pretty clued up on all the latest stationery gadgets money can buy and know the 'Top 101 Different ways of kitting out your office ready for the New Year' like the back of your hand…

…And don't get me wrong, I appreciate that super sweet scent that radiates off a freshly opened diary as much as the next guy BUT has anyone thought about what to do with all the old stuff that you haven't quite got around to sorting out yet?

I can bet that by now your office is feeling a little less 2018 and a little more 20...help me!

If this is the case, then I'm afraid that your office is officially suffering from a severe case of STUFF overhaul.

You know, just STUFF.

New STUFF, old STUFF... and STUFF that quite frankly you didn't know you even had*

*Those documents you stuffed behind the printer that time you thought no one was looking or maybe that time you hid that thing in the back of that desk drawer...

Send the STUFF packing!

According to organizedwork.com the average office employee spends a total of 6 weeks per year looking for things – and that’s no statistic to be proud of!

Not only does it eat up your valuable time but Psychology Today stated that ridding your spaces of that extra clutter can actually de-stress the workplace and aid to your cognitive function.

Maybe that’s why we’re still struggling to get back into that 9-5 routine….?

Anyhow, I know we’re not all into mass-scale de-cluttering operations, especially when every drawer you open presents you with an overwhelming feeling of dismay, but believe me when I say that it CAN be done.

Rest assured, it’s not as hopeless as it seems!

All I ask is that you follow these next few simple tips and I guarantee you’ll be well on your way to a new and improved workplace – that will give you something to be proud of.

1. Don’t be afraid of the shredder

Not every file and document is precious. Learn to let go.

Studies show that an astounding 80% percent of what we file never gets looked at again (napo.net).

Take an hour out of your afternoon and arm yourself with a motivated bunch of co-workers. Set your team the task of ridding your office with any unneeded data and files!

You’d be surprised how such a simple task will transform your office. It is arguable that a lot of things should be kept electronically anyway – move out of the dark ages and adopt new habits of scanning files in and storing them on your computer!

2. Invest in nifty Storage solutions

There are so many different variations of desk organisers. Not only do they clear some space and make it tidier but they also improve the overall appearance of the office.

And who doesn’t like looking good?

3. Fortify a plan

Offices are busy, fast-paced environments with a high volume of people traffic. How do you avoid all your hard work going to waste, you ask?

Implement a keep-it-clean plan!

This one is something that you’re going to have to come up with yourselves, as it needs to specifically suit you and your team. Starting with things like ‘clear desk’ policies and going paperless are amongst the most popular ways of keeping on top of your hard work.

If everyone does their part as they go along then there will be no need to tackle this tedious task ever again.

I am aware that all these things may sound like a lot of effort, but if you take these steps I assure you that it’ll effortlessly maintain itself from here on out!

Be the star of the office, earn that employee of the month title and be the first to take these steps in introducing some order.

They’ll thank you later.
